The Cost of Entertainment: A Steep Climb in 2025
Get ready for a shocking revelation! The cost of streaming and gaming subscriptions took a dramatic turn in 2025, leaving many Americans feeling the pinch. According to the US Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the prices for video streaming and gaming access skyrocketed by a whopping 29% from December 2024 to December 2025. But here's where it gets controversial...
The Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U), representing over 90% of the US population, saw an overall increase of 2.7% before seasonal adjustments. However, the 'subscription and rental of video and video games' category, which includes popular SVOD services like Netflix and Disney+, experienced a much steeper climb.
For context, this category includes not just streaming services but also the rental of physical media and temporary downloads. And this is the part most people miss: the CPI-U for this category doesn't account for seasonal adjustments, which means it might not fully reflect the actual price increases consumers face.
When we look at the unadjusted data, as the BLS suggests is most relevant to consumers, the picture becomes even more concerning. From November to December 2025 alone, the adjusted inflation for subscription and rental of video and video games was a staggering 19.5%.
This category saw higher inflation than any other CPI-U subcategory, including food items. Instant coffee, roasted coffee, and uncooked beef steaks followed with inflation rates of 28%, 18.7%, and 17.8% respectively.
So, what does this mean for consumers? With streaming and gaming subscriptions becoming increasingly popular, the rising costs could significantly impact household budgets.
Are these price hikes justified? Is the value we get from these services worth the increasing cost? These are questions we should all be asking. What are your thoughts on the matter? Feel free to share your opinions and experiences in the comments below!
