RS Elite Class and RS Sailing agree planned transition to independent class association management
The RS Elite Class Association and RS Sailing have announced an exciting development for the RS Elite Class. RS Sailing will be handing over the manufacturing rights, allowing the Elite Class to move forward independently. This decision marks a significant step for the class, as it will now have the opportunity to shape its own future and take full ownership of decision-making.
The RS Elite, launched in 2004 by RS Sailing, is a three-person 7.4-meter (24ft) keelboat designed by Phil Morrison. It was created with the goal of modernizing the classic racing sailboat, inspired by designs like the X One Design, Sunbeam, and Swallow. As a strict one-design class, it ensures close and competitive racing, making it one of the most competitive keelboat fleets in the country.
The RS Elite's popularity is attributed to its high-quality and rewarding sailing experience. Its sociable nature and strong community have encouraged a resurgence of interest, bringing together partners, families, youths, and newcomers. Owners can enjoy one-design club racing in various locations, including Anglesey, Belfast Lough, Burnham-on-Crouch, Hayling Island, and Dunmore East in County Waterford, Ireland.
The Association organizes regular events, such as local open meetings, regional and national championships, and fleet racing in multi-class regattas. The RS Elite's ease of use, high ballast ratio, carbon mast, shallow draft, and symmetrical spinnaker make it a forgiving and fast boat that can be raced almost anywhere. This has led to a passionate community of Elite owners who appreciate the fleet's convenience and competitive nature.
The decision to move forward independently was a joint agreement between RS Sailing and the Elite Association. RS Sailing, a renowned manufacturer of performance dinghies, will continue to focus on its diverse portfolio and future developments. The Elite Class Association now has the freedom to steer its own direction, develop emerging fleets, and strengthen established ones. This includes expanding in Anglesey, Aldeburgh, and Dunmore East, while also nurturing the fleets in Hayling Island and Burnham-on-Crouch.
Gerry Reid, Chair of the RS Elite Association, expressed his enthusiasm, highlighting the pride in the boat and the community it has fostered. He thanked RS Sailing for their exceptional design and support over the years. Alex Newton-Southon also praised the RS Elite and the class's achievements, emphasizing the positive impact of the planned transition on both parties. This move will empower the Elite Class to build upon its strengths, focus on growth, and continue delivering exceptional racing experiences for its sailors.
