Real Madrid faces a potential squad crisis with up to ten players sidelined! This is a worrying prospect for Los Blancos as they prepare for their next fixture. But here's where it gets concerning: the sheer number of absentees could significantly impact their performance.
Legendary French footballer Marcel Desailly, currently in Madrid as part of the Laureus Academy, recently shared his insights on various Real Madrid matters. His comments touched upon the much-discussed incident involving Gianluca Prestianni and Vinicius Jr., as well as Real Madrid's current form and how the club will navigate the absence of Kylian Mbappe due to injury.
Desailly on the Vinicius-Prestianni Incident: A Shift in Perspective
When questioned about the Prestianni and Vinicius Jr. situation, Desailly expressed his approval of Jose Mourinho's adjusted stance. "I'm glad to see that Prestianni didn’t play and that Mourinho changed his approach to the issue a bit. He (Vinicius) can celebrate. There’s no problem," Desailly stated. He was specifically referring to Mourinho's prior warning to Prestianni that his career under him would be jeopardized if he were found guilty of racism.
Desailly firmly believes that the public's perception of Vinicius Jr. is skewed and that the persistent racism he endures is entirely unacceptable. "The problem is the perception people have of Vinicius; we have to put an end to it and accept the fact that some things need to change. Because it’s unacceptable for things like this to happen inside a stadium," he emphasized. He further elaborated, "The player plays, he celebrates, and that doesn’t make it a provocation that justifies those offences. I’m glad that FIFA is very focused on these cases."
And this is the part most people miss... While Desailly champions Vinicius Jr.'s right to celebrate, it's worth considering how player celebrations can sometimes be perceived differently by opposing fans, even if unintentionally. Is there a fine line between genuine expression and perceived taunting?
Desailly on Real Madrid's Current Form and the Mbappe Factor
Desailly, who himself tasted Champions League glory in 1993 with Marseille, also offered his thoughts on how Real Madrid can regain their dominant status. "In terms of speed of execution, they aren’t as composed, but they have individual players who can maintain the standard until, collectively, they manage to fine-tune what’s needed to become that famous Real Madrid again. But, in the meantime, it’s good that they have a bit of composure," the Frenchman observed.
He also addressed the impact of Kylian Mbappe's injury. Desailly predicted that Los Blancos would revert to their characteristic possession-based style of play. "Simply put, he’s injured. He has very good goal-scoring statistics. The coach now needs to readjust the philosophy, and Real Madrid will return to their usual possession-based style. And Mbappé is the icing on the cake, an incredible player. When he returns, he’ll still be just too good, as always," he concluded.
However, the situation for Real Madrid has become even more dire with the recent confirmation of Rodrygo's injury. This setback could potentially sideline him for nearly a year and, crucially, cause him to miss the upcoming FIFA World Cup. This dual blow significantly exacerbates Real Madrid's squad challenges.
