A shocking revelation about a popular fatty liver treatment strategy has scientists sounding the alarm. The approach, once thought to be a promising solution, may actually be a hidden cancer risk, especially as we age.
Researchers from Australia's Adelaide University have published a study in Science Advances that challenges the growing interest in a particular enzyme inhibitor. The study focuses on Caspase-2, an enzyme that plays a critical role in maintaining liver health.
Here's where it gets controversial: the research suggests that blocking Caspase-2, while initially seen as a protective measure against fatty liver disease, could lead to chronic liver damage and an increased risk of liver cancer.
Lead researcher Loretta Dorstyn explains that Caspase-2 is crucial for managing the genetic stability of liver cells and controlling fat levels. Without this enzyme, liver cells can become abnormally large and damaged, leading to inflammation and fibrosis.
In their study, Dorstyn and her team found that mice lacking functional Caspase-2 developed chronic liver inflammation and hepatitis-like symptoms, including scarring and oxidative damage. As these mice aged, they were much more likely to develop liver cancer, with rates up to four times higher than normal mice.
"The findings overturn assumptions that inhibiting Caspase-2 is universally beneficial," Dorstyn said. "Our research shows that this enzyme is essential for removing damaged liver cells with age, and without it, these cells accumulate and fuel cancer growth."
