Josh Freese has spoken about leaving Foo Fighters, saying he still isn’t sure of the exact reason behind the band’s decision. In May, the Foos announced that Freese would be leaving the drummer role, with Freese describing himself as shocked and disappointed by the move. He had joined the group as their touring drummer in 2023 after Taylor Hawkins’s sudden passing in 2022. He was eventually replaced by former Nine Inch Nails stickman Ilan Rubin, and Freese joined Trent Reznor and his band on their North American tour in August.
Freese, when asked about the departure, said that no official reason had been given. He reflected that he enjoyed the past two years with the Foos and supported whatever the band believed was best. He also joked about “10 possible reasons for being booted from Foo Fighters.” In August, he suggested the decision might have been more about management than music, admitting the Foo Fighters’ music itself wasn’t something he felt a strong personal resonance with.
On a December 10 radio appearance, he was asked if he had received any explanation. He replied that he hadn’t really, noting that he had a few theories but worried that any statement he makes could be amplified, reshaped, and widely circulated.
Meanwhile, Trent Reznor explained how the drummer swap with Nine Inch Nails came about. Reznor said the news that Ilan Rubin would join Foo Fighters came as a surprise to him. Rubin had been a solid contributor, but the schedule for an upcoming tour leg created a timing dilemma: replace him immediately after the European leg in early summer 2025 or wait until the late summer North American leg, risking a break over the holiday period to find another drummer.
Reznor described the decision to bring Freese back for the forthcoming shows: once he learned Freese was available and willing, it made sense on multiple levels. He emphasized that Freese’s abilities are undeniable and that the arrangement was driven by practicality and professional respect.
