Health Canada Issues Urgent Recall: Chemical Hazard Found in Popular Soap Brand (2026)

A critical health alert has been issued by Health Canada, urging immediate action from consumers across the nation. The reason? A chemical hazard linked to a popular soap brand. But here's where it gets controversial...

Health Canada has announced a Canada-wide recall of soaps produced by Lake on the Woods Sunrise Soap Co., an Ontario-based company. The recall stems from a concerning issue: an excessive concentration of methyl eugenol, a substance with potential carcinogenic properties.

According to the official recall notice, approximately 400 units of the company's "Shades of Grey" bar soap were distributed across Canada between January 2019 and January 2026. The affected products, manufactured in Kenora, Ontario, come in three sizes: 16g, 67g, and 135g bars.

Methyl eugenol, while naturally occurring in botanical extracts, is prohibited as a pure ingredient due to its potential health risks. The notice clarifies that its presence in the soap exceeds the permissible limits, hence the urgent recall.

Interestingly, as of January 7th, no incidents or injuries related to the use of these soaps have been reported. However, Health Canada and the soap company are taking a proactive approach to ensure consumer safety.

The recall notice advises consumers to immediately discontinue using the recalled products, dispose of them, and contact Lake of the Woods Sunrise Soap Co. for a replacement. The company can be reached via email at lakeofthewoodssoap@gmail.com for further assistance.

Health Canada has also encouraged consumers to report any health or safety concerns related to this or any other consumer product or cosmetic. This can be done by filling out the Consumer Product Incident Report Form on their website.

So, here's the part most people miss: while no injuries have been reported yet, the potential health risks associated with methyl eugenol are a serious concern. It's a reminder of the importance of staying vigilant about the products we use daily.

What's your take on this recall? Do you think enough is being done to ensure consumer safety, or should more stringent measures be taken? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
