Electric Toyota HiLux Models Fetch Mixed Results at Auction
The electric Toyota HiLux models, once part of a failed startup, have been put up for auction, revealing a fascinating tale of success and failure. One of the vehicles sold for nearly $40,000, while the other remained unsold, despite attracting 126 and 138 bids, respectively.
The 2023 Toyota HiLux SR 4x4 dual-cab, with its 126 bids, found a buyer in the remote town of Jiggi, New South Wales, for $39,200. In contrast, the 2022 Toyota HiLux SR 4x2 dual-cab, after 138 bids, fell short of its reserve price, set at $24,199.
This auction was the result of MEVCO, a now-defunct startup, which aimed to supply mines with electric utes. The HiLux vehicles were sent to auction after MEVCO entered administration, owing millions. However, the story doesn't end here.
Toyota has officially revealed the HiLux BEV (battery electric vehicle) in November, based on the new-generation model. This electric HiLux will be marketed towards fleet buyers, such as mining companies, and will also be available for retail customers. The HiLux BEV is a significant development, offering a registerable electric option for those interested.
MEVCO initially focused on electrifying Toyota models, including the HiLux and LandCruiser utes. However, the company shifted its focus to supply mining companies with left-hand-drive Rivian R1T utes imported from the US. Unfortunately, the R1Ts were returned to the administrator and never went up for auction, leaving their fate uncertain.
This auction highlights the challenges and opportunities in the electric vehicle market. While one HiLux found a buyer, the other's unsold status raises questions about the demand for electric utes and the future of such ventures.
