Bangladesh's climate crisis is a ticking time bomb, with rising sea levels, cyclones, and flooding threatening its very foundation. The impact on infrastructure and the agri-food economy is devastating, and the numbers don't lie. Recent studies show that flooding alone causes an estimated €12.3 billion in damages to the transport sector, and these losses are only projected to increase by 2050. This is a wake-up call, and we must act now to protect Bangladesh's future.
The Global Center on Adaptation (GCA) is leading the charge, aiming to strengthen climate-resilient infrastructure planning and investment. Building on existing efforts, GCA, in partnership with the Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change (MoEFCC), is taking a bold step forward. They are identifying and preparing priority investment projects that integrate Nature-based Solutions (NbS) to reinforce the resilience of Bangladesh's agri-food value chains. This initiative is a game-changer, and it's backed by the UK International Development with funds from the UK government.
GCA is employing a structured and data-driven approach to ensure the success of this project. They are combining climate risk analytics, spatial mapping of critical agri-food hotspots, and multi-criteria analysis to prioritize investment cases. The first step is to validate this process and align financing opportunities, and that's where our roundtable discussion comes in.
Our first roundtable discussion, held between December 2025 and March 2026, is a crucial milestone. It brings together government agencies, development partners, DFIs, and private-sector representatives to validate the prioritization process and ensure stakeholder ownership. This is a collaborative effort, and we need everyone's input to make it a success.
The project is divided into phases, and we're currently in the first one. We're reviewing the 35 project ideas identified during the Bangladesh Climate Resilient Infrastructure Investment Roadmap and shortlisting them down to 10-15 projects with strong links to NbS and agri-food value chains. Then, we'll apply a multi-criteria analysis to prioritize the top 3-4 high-impact projects for investment.
