Earlier this week, Apple announced that John Giannandrea, its senior vice president of Machine Learning and AI Strategy, will retire in early 2025. And this is the part most people miss: Just days earlier, Apple revealed that General Counsel Kate Adams and Vice President for Environment, Policy, and Social Initiatives Lisa Jackson are also retiring. Adams, who joined Apple from Honeywell in 2017, navigated the company through intense antitrust scrutiny, including major App Store lawsuits. Jackson, a former administrator of the US Environmental Protection Agency under President Barack Obama, led Apple’s diversity programs and policy efforts in Washington, DC. Both reported directly to Cook, making their departures particularly significant.
But the leadership shakeup doesn’t stop there. In a move that’s sparked debate, Meta has poached Alan Dye, Apple’s longtime head of user interface design. Dye’s departure is seen as another blow to Apple’s design organization, which has reportedly been struggling since Jony Ive’s exit in 2019. Dye played a pivotal role in shaping the design of Apple’s recent software and devices, and his move to Meta isn’t happening in isolation—Billy Sorrentino, a senior design director at Apple since 2016, is joining him. This double departure has left many wondering about the future of Apple’s design vision.
The list of exits grows longer: COO Jeff Williams retired last month, former hardware head Dan Riccio left in the fall, and now Giannandrea, Adams, Jackson, and Dye are following suit.
